Allelophatic Plants In Indonesia

Allelopathy is a biological phenomenon by which an organism produces one or more biochemicals that influence the germination, growth, survival, and reproduction of other organisms. These biochemicals are known as allelochemicals and can have beneficial (positive allelopathy) or detrimental (negative allelopathy) effects on the target organisms and the community. Allelochemicals are a subset of secondary metabolites,[1] which are not required for metabolism (i.e. growth, development and reproduction) of the allelopathic organism. Allelochemicals with negative allelopathic effects are an important part of plant defense against herbivory. [Wikipedia]

Some of allelophatic plants in Indonesia which is very interesting and famous are:

1. Verbena brasiliensis

Scientific classification:
  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Order: Lamiales
  • Family: Verbenaceae
  • Genus: Verbena
  • Species: v. brasiliensis
Known as:
  • Brazilian verbena
  • Brazilian vetvein
  • verbena (indonesia) --> chicken feces flower
About this plant:
  • Now invaded huge area of Bromo-Semeru Mountain National Park (20 hectare of sabana)
  • Originally from south america
  • Commonly missidentified  as lavender because it color
  • Easily spreaded by seed, and will more widespreaded. so the management  of national parks allowed  (even recommend)  the climbers to pull it up and bring it home
  • In a research, the powdered  leaves of this species suppressed the growth  of lettuce seedlings, suggesting allelopathy

2. Lantana camara

Scientific classification:
  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Order: Lamiales
  • Family: Verbenaceae
  • Genus: Lantana
  • Species: L. camara
Known as:

About this plant:
  • Commonly use for hedgerows  as ornamental plants
  • Originally from central and south america
  • Can be toxic for livestock
  • Inhibiting seed germination, root elongation, and the growth  of some plant species
  • Known as medicinal treatment of external injuries (Bogor)

3. Ageratum conyzoides

Scientific classification:
  • Kingdom  :  Plantae
  • Order       : Asterales
  • Family      : Asteraceae
  • Tribe        : Eupatorieae
  • Genus      : Ageratum
  • Species    :  A. conyzoides
Known as:
  • Billygoat-weed
  • Chick weed
  • Goatweed
  • Whiteweed
  • Babadotan/wedusan (indonesia) --> like sheep (because the smell releases from this plant resembles the smell of goat)
About this plant:
  • High in adaptation ability
  • Originally from central america and carribean
  • Wide spreaded to tropic and subtropic areas
  • Commonly known as weed
  • With a dose of 2 ton/ha, can decrease 75% growth of weed in  rice plantation such as Aeschynomene indica, Monochoria vagina/is, and Echinochloa crus• galli
  • Known as medicinal treatment of external injuries
